As much as I’m glad to see the Iranian security apparatus getting hamstrung by our efforts in preserving freedom, how PRECISELY do we know that:

1.) These are actual spam accounts, and
2.) These accounts are in ANY WAY related to the Iranian security apparatus?

I ask not because I doubt, but because we must be sure before we deny someone the right to speak their mind. I read a compelling report from one of those accounts, one which stated that Ahmadinejad was the likely victor (despite the fact that all of the other data in the SAME report indicates that a majority of Iranians favored the reformist platform before Ahmadinejad’s…)

Anyways, what I’m saying is… Twitspam.org ought to be able to provide us with a little bit more information as to precisely how it arrived at the conclusion for each of these accounts.

Again, I’m not saying these AREN’T accounts used by the Iranian government – but how and why should I trust that Twitspam.org has rightfully accused these accounts of spam and ties to Iranian Orwellian security types?

  2. Lightning Jim on June 17, 2009 5:30 am

I’m not the one that compiled this list BUT some of those have been creating FAKE RTs of other accounts such as twitter.com/serv_ and others such as twitter.com/IRFORREAL are abusing the Iran hash tags to SPAM products.

If you at least look at the accounts at what they are doing then you should at least see the same thing. (I’m not sure if you did even look at these accounts at all or if you are just reacting and are worried about an agenda.)

[...] Peer Source Verification is occurring in a really strong way for the first time with the Iran election situation driving the process. With Iranian citizens blogging and twittering about what is happening in Iran at the same time as Iran’s efforts to control, limit and often co-opt the information coming out of Iran people around the world are using their existing trust networks, their personal relationships, common sense and a sophisticated understanding of our modern tools to ferret out who is really presenting factual information and who is spewing spam or chaff. One such example is an effort going on at Twitspam to identify Fake Iran Election Tweeters. [...]

Seems quite likely that some of the posters such as freemedianews could be from friendly governments not the Iranian security apparatus. 69. Noli Irritare Leones » Blog Archive » Sifting the Tweets on June 20, 2009 9:39 pm

[...] The #iranelection Twitter feed has definitely been set upon both by spammers (I’ve seen people using it to post links to porn) and accounts sending out pro-government propaganda. Among the latter is @jimjones45, an account that appears to be a bot, set up to repeat the same Tweets over and over. I saw this account earlier repeatedly saying that Ahmadinejad had won, and that 99% of the Twitter traffic supporting the protests came from people in the US. The latter is, of course, certainly false; in the first place, there’s a huge Twitter traffic from within Iran, and in the second place, the Twitter traffic in support from outside Iran (not counting Iranian diaspora traffic) is coming from numerous countries, nowhere near 99% from the US. But believability is, perhaps, not the point here; the account managed to spam up the #iranelection feed by getting real people to argue with it, and, since its repetitive Tweets suggest it to be a bot, probably with less time spent by the person setting it up than got sucked up by the people arguing. Twitspam continues to track such fake Iran election Tweeters. [...]

Look for disinformation, there has been a lot of secret police activity on twitter lately.  Some of them are even getting quite good.  They will retweet good info for a while and then they they will throw out a really bad one, asking people to call a (Basiji) number for help with wounded protesters. If you spot someone laying traps like this, you must expose them.  I recommend you follow agitators for a while to learn their patterns. Here is a few to get you started @Aminiran , @rey_diaz , @EyeRanProtestr. When you find one you can notify @FindTheRats who keeps a track of them in his follow list.  There is also a list of corrupt twitterers kept at twitspam. [...]
